About Barry

Barry Karpiak is a retired photographer based out of Edmonton, AB. He began photography in 1970 in portrait photography, sports tournaments, weddings, and dance school photoshoots. His love for visual art didn't stop at photography, as Barry is also a skilled landscape & portrait painter, and has commissioned many paintings as a freelance artist and as a private painting tutor.

As part of his Ukrainian roots, Barry is an alumni member of Shumka and Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and had a 33 year Artistic Director career with the Zorianka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, and later moving to co-ownership of Korynnia Ukrainian Dance Ensemble with his wife Ollie Karpiak before retiring from teaching dance in 2009. Now with 4 grown children, Barry enjoys spending his time with his family creating beautiful pysanky- a cherished Easter tradition for the Karpiaks. He teaches his young nieces, nephews, and grand-daughter the art of Pysanky and enjoys seeing what creations they can make with his guiding hand.

Barry's works have been coveted by his intricate patterns and artisric style of his Pysanky and he is honoured to pass on his knowledge and love of his Ukrainian culture in this Pysanky workshop. Get your kistkas ready!
