Sammy Volkov | December 13

With its release in 2022, Be Alright!, was the first album to debut at #1 on Alberta's CKUA Top 30 Chart. His duets album with Dana Wylie "The Day Had To Come" was in CKUA's Top 30 for 16 weeks. The Portland/Edmonton based singer has “...vocals that emanate…an air of melancholy. Roy Orbison, with a dash of Chris Isaak and a pinch of gospel-era Elvis Presley are the knee-jerk comparisons, as Volkov sings like a man out of time.” (The Edmonton Journal). He has shared stages with Mariel Buckley, Boy Golden, Del Barber, Frazey Ford, and recently appeared at the Edmonton and Calgary Folk Music Festivals.

Ruth Purves-Smith | October 25

Ruth Purves-Smith, author, and singer-songwriter, has had a remarkable journey in the music world. Born and raised in Calgary, Ruth had a unique upbringing. Her family ran a Custom Wool Mill, which her parents started in the 1970s. The mill, now managed by her sister, spun rich tapestries of creativity much like Ruth’s musical journey. Ruth received her first guitar in fifth grade, a Classical Espana, which accompanied her across the world, around campfires, and on horseback journeys. It has since been restored and remains cherished within her family. Her rural life in Swalwell, Alberta, fueled her passion for songwriting and storytelling. She found a sense of belonging in this tight-knit community. Ruth’s music spans genres, from country to Celtic-infused folk rock. Ruth released her first album in 2010, followed by her second in 2016. Her third album, featuring all original songs, just dropped August 16th, 2024. Ruth’s live performances are captivating. Having toured extensively, she honed her craft while touring North America and Europe. Her compelling lyrics and restless, rhythmic sound resonate with audiences. Ruth Purves Smith’s life has been a symphony of creativity, resilience, and heartfelt melodies.

Friday Nite Live - Darian King | Jan Baker [Double Bill]

Live music starts at 7:00 pm | $10 Cover

The Carrot Friday Nite Live presents Darian King | Jan Baker [Double Bill]

Darian King

Darian King is a singer/songwriter originally from the south east corner of Saskatchewan where Treaty 4 meets Treaty 2, Darian is a proud Métis two-spirit person who began teaching themselves guitar at a young age and started writing their own songs at 15, now many years later they feel songwriting has became their greatest outlet of expression. Indigenous and queer, seeking refuge in a sea of sad little acoustic songs. Since Darian grew up in such a small town as a queer person they never felt like they fit in, Darian is always just trying to create a space where we can all belong together.

Jan Baker

You might think that the clarity and ease with which Jan portrays her message in song comes naturally; it is a gift but Jan has perfected her style through years of training, starting at the age of 13 with private vocal lessons. At the age of 16, Jan was fronting folk groups and singing backup on television specials and at recording studios. Midlife saw Jan performing with Edmonton Musical Theatre and Caviar Drama Players. Jan released her first CD “IN GOOD TIME” in 2007. Family life has always taken precedent in Jan’s life and after some major life incidents in 2007, it has been family first, music second. You may be lucky to catch Jan performing in various group configurations at a folk club or festival, Christmas party or even a coffee shop. Don’t miss out!

Live music starts at 7:00 pm | $10 Cover

The Carrot Friday Nite Live presents Melaku Bireda

My name is artist Melaku Bireda. I was born and raised in Ethiopia and my childhood was notcomfortable and I spent 4 years on the streets. However, by not giving up, I was able to gradually get out of the terrible life I was in by using the favourable opportunities I got from studying, working and the musical talent in me. In my musical life I released three albums and in addition to this I also released Twists Beguragea Full Album 1999.

Apart from reflecting the culture and values of the community that raised me with the musical talent given to me, I served by resisting the political, economic and psychological pressure of the previous government on my community and making music that focuses on that. At that time, I was subjected to serious threats and intimidation, imprisonment, harassment and abuse by the government. Hence, living in the country was very dangerous for my safety, so after living in exile in different countries since.

From 2010 TO 2019 South Africa,Sudden, U.A.E., I am currently living a stable life in Canada. I am grateful for the support given by the country and government of Canada and respect the human and democratic rights of every citizen and to promote that culture and tradition.

Live music starts at 7:00 pm | $10 Cover | All Ages

The Carrot Friday Nite Live presents Lori Reid

In service to the sacred sound, Lori Reid believes music is to be felt rather than heard. What began as a recording debut with 2003’s RADIO, developed into a 20 year residency as ⅓ founding member of an Alberta “super group” to a 2 album recording relationship with Colin Linden. Reids fate was sealed by a chance meeting at a small gig in Banff…The Fates ( Reid, Jenny Allen, Lin Elder) recorded and toured 3 albums as a group, Till We Have Faces in 2004, the live recording slam in 2006 and Therapy hitting #2 on the CKUA top 100 of 2008. The fates music continues to be re-released on their youtube channel. 2012 saw Reid collaborate with Colin Linden following his Fates Therapy sessions, on her second solo release, Temperance Hotel. Featuring Linden on multi instruments, including scoring and production duties, the album also featured Lin Elder, Willie Nelson's harmonica collaborator, Mickey Rapheal, and Nashville master craftsmen, Bryan Owings and Dave Roe. Temperance Hotel peaked at #5 on the Roots Report and received National airplay on public, commercial and satellite radio. Most recently, Reid has been collaborating with Manitoba songwriter, Heather Jean Jordan with their multi-genre duo, The Evangelines, based in Banff. After a move to Edmonton in the Spring of 2023, Reid now circles the elements and enjoys passionate collaboration in the Northern music scene.

Friday Nite Live - Paula Eve Kirman

Live music starts at 7:00 pm | $5 Cover | All Ages

The Carrot Friday Nite Live presents Paula Eve Kirman

Paula Eve Kirman is a singer/songwriter who writes and performs music with a message. She has been performing her original work in Edmonton since 2007 at a variety of festivals, social justice events, and cafes. She became interested in both music and social justice at a young age, in part due to being raised on her mother's love of 60s folk music by the likes of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Peter, Paul and Mary. After receiving her first guitar at 13, Paula immediately began to teach herself how to play and write songs. Paula's lyrics and poetry are especially known for having themes of social justice, and has been a contributing factor to a number of awards she has received for her activism. Her songs have been finalists or semi-finalists in a number of competitions. In particular, “Summer,” about an unhoused woman, was a finalist in the 2017 International Songwriting Competition. In the spring of 2021, Paula took part in Soloss, a community care network developed through a partnership between REACH Edmonton, InWithForward (a Vancouver social design agency), and the City of Edmonton's RECOVER Wellbeing initiative. The team was prototyping the Losstender position in Edmonton, based on ethnographic and other research by all of the partners over the previous three years with street-involved Edmontonians. Paula created songs for the three unique people who chose to share their stories with her, as lasting artifacts of their encounters and to help them on their healing journeys through feeling heard and helping to address unmet needs through song. The songs were released in May of 2021 on the EP Losstending. Paula recently released two full-length albums: The Crow, a folky collection of some of her best-known songs and which originally began with Bill Bourne as producer before his untimely death, and Corners, a more upbeat collection of songs Paula began recording at home during pandemic restrictions. Both projects were completed with the help of producer and musician John Armstrong. For Paula, music is a way of reaching a wider and more diverse audience with her messages of peace, human rights, women's issues, the environment, and other social justice themes. It is an extension of her life as an activist and community organizer, as well as her career as a journalist, photographer, and filmmaker.
