Sammy Volkov | December 13

With its release in 2022, Be Alright!, was the first album to debut at #1 on Alberta's CKUA Top 30 Chart. His duets album with Dana Wylie "The Day Had To Come" was in CKUA's Top 30 for 16 weeks. The Portland/Edmonton based singer has “...vocals that emanate…an air of melancholy. Roy Orbison, with a dash of Chris Isaak and a pinch of gospel-era Elvis Presley are the knee-jerk comparisons, as Volkov sings like a man out of time.” (The Edmonton Journal). He has shared stages with Mariel Buckley, Boy Golden, Del Barber, Frazey Ford, and recently appeared at the Edmonton and Calgary Folk Music Festivals.

A Blush of Memories

Gallery Exhibition Date: November 5 - November 30
Opening Reception: November 7, 7pm - 8pm

Our November Gallery “A Blush of Memories” features the incredible works of Noel Rile, Daisy Ann Ramos, and Oliver R. Rabara.

Noel Rile

Noel Rile is a Filipino-Canadian artist, professionally trained from the Far Eastern University in the Philippines. He joined painting sessions and has exhibited in various galleries in the Philippines. In Canada, he continues advocating art for cultural promotions by joining exhibits and art vending at cultural events across Edmonton. He considers art as an expression of self for soul-searching and tranquility and considers art as a passive source of income for busy artists. As a ‘pluralist’, he works on different genres and mediums of art. Notable works he is into include abstractionisms with bright primary colors, landscapes and uniquely putting found objects to do dioramas. As a member of The Palette Club, he is open to clubbing for mentorship and fun socialization through outdoor painting sessions.

Daisy Ann Ramos

Daisy Ann Ramos is a self-taught artist with a penchant for art nouveau style. Using vibrant acrylics, she brings to life striking depictions of the female form that exude elegance and grace, and adorned with elements of playful shapes and florals. Driven by a deep passion for her craft, Daisy continues to hone her skills by joining The Palette Club to further expand her artistic knowledge and techniques. She dedicates herself to creating art through exhibitions, art events, and socialization activities. Her works resonate with beauty and strength, delighting viewers through her unique artistic interpretations.

Oliver R. Rabara

Oliver Rabara is a hybrid artographer in the fine arts, cultural research, and development administration. His 30+ years of professional practice allowed him to work with various artists, institutions, and governments. Oliver currently writes in two Edmonton newspapers about business and the role of art in development. In this exhibit, his “Novo Cubism” twists Picasso’s traditions by composing in layers and displaying a breadth of coloring techniques from transparent, translucent, and opaque. His works are generally poetic and philosophical relative to abstract socio-realism.  Being a member of The Palette Club, he hopes to attract art agents, co-artists, and potential sponsors for collaborative projects in the future

Ruth Purves-Smith | October 25

Ruth Purves-Smith, author, and singer-songwriter, has had a remarkable journey in the music world. Born and raised in Calgary, Ruth had a unique upbringing. Her family ran a Custom Wool Mill, which her parents started in the 1970s. The mill, now managed by her sister, spun rich tapestries of creativity much like Ruth’s musical journey. Ruth received her first guitar in fifth grade, a Classical Espana, which accompanied her across the world, around campfires, and on horseback journeys. It has since been restored and remains cherished within her family. Her rural life in Swalwell, Alberta, fueled her passion for songwriting and storytelling. She found a sense of belonging in this tight-knit community. Ruth’s music spans genres, from country to Celtic-infused folk rock. Ruth released her first album in 2010, followed by her second in 2016. Her third album, featuring all original songs, just dropped August 16th, 2024. Ruth’s live performances are captivating. Having toured extensively, she honed her craft while touring North America and Europe. Her compelling lyrics and restless, rhythmic sound resonate with audiences. Ruth Purves Smith’s life has been a symphony of creativity, resilience, and heartfelt melodies.
